Occupational Health Nurses are employed by any type of employer in the public, private and voluntary sectors. The broad purpose of the occupation is to make sure that people are supported at different stages of their lives, ensuring that individuals have the best start in life and experience good health and wellbeing across the lifespan. They also support and enable people to make informed choices about how to manage health challenges in order to maximise their quality of life and improve health outcomes. They also focus on deprivation, vulnerability and advocacy, and may work in challenging circumstances within adverse home and working conditions.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to make sure work in partnership with people to prevent ill health, protect health and promote safety and wellbeing. Using a formidable evidence base they will lead, influence and collaborate with other agencies, organisations and professionals to improve and embed sustainable changes to the overall health, safety and wellbeing of people at home, within communities, in schools and in the workplace. SCPHNs play a key role in the safeguarding of those people who are most vulnerable in society, and are ambitious for the public health of the communities they serve. They actively pursue sustainable development goals that promote everyone’s right to a healthy life.

Community nurse specialist practitioners provide health care at an advanced level of practice to people of all ages and communities. They work across different organisations and settings; for example, primary care, social care, third-sector organisations, hospitals (including mental health), hospices, prisons, schools and other community services. The occupation’s broad purpose is working with people in a domestic setting (which could be an individual’s house), care homes, a hostel/hotels, prison services etc, a healthcare setting or even the streets, in the case of the homeless population. Community nurse specialist practitioners work independently and autonomously in situations that may be complex and challenging within the context specific environment they are working and are accountable for a large caseload of people with a wide range of complex and/or long-term health conditions, for whom they prioritise care, assess risk and may prescribe medication, dressings and appliances, in accordance with legislation.

This occupation is found in healthcare under the profession of dentistry. Dental nurses work in a clinical environment that could be located in a NHS general dental practice, hospital, private dental practice, specialist dental practice, community dental service or military dental clinic. The clinical environment is called a dental surgery and consists of a dental chair, x-ray unit and various equipment and instruments required for dentistry. An apprentice will predominately work with a dentist, dental hygienist, dental therapist, clinical dental technician or orthodontic therapist within a surgery environment with patients attending throughout the day.
