Focus on Job Families: Midwifery

17 April, 2025

There are a wide range of apprenticeships available in areas such as Dental, Nursing, Healthcare Science and more. In the coming weeks we will be highlighting different areas to show the fantastic apprenticeships that are available. This week on ‘Focus on Job Families’, we will be focusing on Midwifery.

Apprenticeships give employers the opportunity to recruit fresh new talent as well as recruit and train individuals from the local area. They also create the opportunity for career progression for existing staff.

Midwives often describe their job as ‘privileged’. The role they have in preparing women for the delivery of new life makes them a vital presence during all stages of pregnancy, labour and the early postnatal period.

Midwives deal with pregnant women which require support and advice from a professional. They are likely the lead health professional contact for the woman, providing evidence-based information and helping make informed decisions and choices for the options and services throughout the pregnancy. Midwives also help teach new and expectant mothers from variety of cultural, economic, social and religious backgrounds to feed and care for their newborns. The role requires full confidence and exceptional communication skills.
