The Allied Health Professions team provides treatment and help to: rehabilitate adults and children who are ill, injured, have disabilities or special needs, to live life as fully as possible. They work across a wide range of different settings in the community, for example in GP practices, people’s homes and schools, as well as hospitals. They often work in the NHS, the independent sector or for charities. At the frontline of healthcare, all the allied health professions involve working directly with patients, usually one-to-one, but sometimes with groups of people who share similar health problems or goals. Apprenticeship opportunities in the Allied Health Professions Team include: Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Arts Therapist, Assistant Practitioner, Diagnostic Radiographer, Dietitian, Healthcare Support Worker, Occupational Therapist, Operating Department Practitioner, Paramedic, Physiotherapist, Podiatrist, Prosthetic/Orthotic Technician, Prosthetist/Orthotist, Senior Healthcare Support Worker (AHP Therapy Support), Sonographer, Speech and Language Therapist and Therapeutic Radiographer.
The Ambulance Service team transports patients to where they need to be cared for in emergency and non-emergency situations. Ambulance service staff coordinate calls received to ensure the right response is provided, provide care at the scene of the emergency, drive ambulances and other vehicles, and care for the patients travelling in them. Apprenticeship opportunities in the Ambulance Service Team include (but not limited to): Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Ambulance Support Worker, Associate Ambulance Practitioner, Emergency Service Contact Handler and Paramedic.
The Corporate services team is made up of specialists who use their professional skills to manage services across the health sector. Corporate services support both clinical and non-clinical areas. Areas within the Corporate Services team include Audit, Finance, Governance, HR and Projects. There will be a very wide range of job opportunities within corporate services teams, including apprenticeship opportunities in (but not limited to): Assistant Accountant, Associate Project Manager, Business Administrator, Financial Services Administrator, HR Consultant, HR Support, Payroll Administrator and Project Manager.
The Dental team is much bigger than simply the dentist. The wider dental team will have day-to-day contact with a range of people and their work makes a real difference to people’s oral health. The dental team may work in a variety of settings including general high street practices, specialist dental practices hospitals, community services or in universities. Opportunities for apprenticeships in the Dental Team currently includes: Clinical Dental Technician, Laboratory Technician (dental), Dental Nurse, Dental Practice Manager, Dental Technician, Oral Health Practitioner and Orthodontic Therapist.
The Estates Services team are specialists who use their professional skills to manage buildings and the environment in the health sector. Apprenticeship opportunities include (but is not limited to): Building Services Engineering Technician, Carpenter/Joiner, Facilities Management Supervisor, Facilities Manager, Facilities Services Operative, Ground Worker, Painter & Decorator and Property Maintenance Operative.
The Health Informatics team is made up of specialists who use the latest technology available to provide better care for patients and to manage IT services across the health sector. This can include electronic delivery of information across multiple platforms, development and managements of ICT infrastructures, analysis and interpretation of health data as well as delivering digital projects that better support patient care. Apprenticeship opportunities include (but not limited to): Digital and Technology Solutions Professional, Clinical Coder, Digital Marketer, Digital Support Technician, IT Support and Library, Information and Archive Services Assistant
The Healthcare Science team plays a vital role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of a huge number of medical conditions, as well as in rehabilitation. They use their knowledge of science and their technical skills to save lives and improve care either in a supporting role or directly with patients. Healthcare Science is a term that brings together Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Bioinformatics, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Physiological Sciences. The Healthcare Science apprenticeships include (but not limited to): Healthcare Science Assistant, Healthcare Science Associate, Healthcare Science Practitioner, Laboratory Technician and Laboratory Scientist.
The Healthcare Support Work team of support staff play an important part in the care and support of adults and children. They work in a range of clinical settings such as hospitals, GP practices, community services or hospices carrying out clinical or therapeutic tasks under the supervision of a doctor, nurse or allied health professional. Apprenticeship opportunities include (but not limited to): Mammography Associate, Nursing Associate, Physician Associate, Healthcare Support Worker, Senior Healthcare Support Worker (includes Adult Nursing Support Worker, Allied Health Profession Therapy Support Worker, Children and Young People Support Worker, Maternity Support Worker, Mental Health Support Worker and Theatre Support Worker).
Human resources make sure that staff are fully supported and able to do their jobs. This includes introducing new employment policies, the recruitment of staff, and keeping up to date records on employees. Organisational development teams support individuals to develop personally and professionally and to ensure that organisations deliver safe and effective services. Typical apprenticeships in the team include (but not limited to): Recruitment Resourcer, Learning & Development Practitioner, HR Consultant/Partner, Career Development Professional and Senior People Professional.
The Leadership and Management team includes health service managers, many of whom have a clinical background. They are responsible for commissioning and delivering local healthcare, through the management of hospitals, GP practices or community health services. Apprenticeships in the Leadership and Management Team will include (but not limited to): Operations Departmental Manager, Senior Leader and Team Leader/ Supervisor.
The Learning and Organisational development team supports individuals to develop personally and professionally and to ensure that organisations deliver safe and effective services. The team will be involved in education and training opportunities, coaching and mentoring, quality and service improvement projects. Typical apprenticeships in the team include (but not limited to): Assessor/Coach, HR Consultant, Improvement Practitioner, Learning and Skills Teacher, Learning and Development Practitioner, Learning Mentor and Project Manager.
The Midwifery team provides care and support to women and their families during pregnancy, labour and during the period after a baby’s birth. The team will work in GP practices, people’s homes and in hospitals. Apprenticeship opportunities within the Midwifery Team include: Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Healthcare Support Worker, Senior Healthcare Support Worker (Maternity Support) and Midwife.
The Nursing team works together to provide care for adults and children with physical or mental ill health or disability. Nursing roles can vary from helping someone with basic daily tasks to administering life-saving drugs. Registered nurses work in different areas and are in charge of assessing, diagnosing, planning and evaluating treatment. They are supported by the wider nursing team. Nursing staff can choose to work in a range of settings from patients’ homes, GP practices, schools, nursing homes and other areas such as prisons or hospices. Apprenticeships include: Advanced Clinical Practitioner, District Nurse, Healthcare Support Worker, Nursing Associate, Registered Nurse, Senior Healthcare Support Worker and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.
The Optical team assesses the structure and function of the eye and the visual system of people of all ages who will have a range of abilities and needs from poor sight through to complications of diabetes. Members of the optical team will be found working in high street retail and in hospital settings. Apprenticeship opportunities include: Business Administrator, Optical Assistant, Team Leader/Supervisor.
The Pharmacy team play a vital part in patient care and recovery as well as public health, by using their expert knowledge of medicines and their uses. They work with colleagues in the wider healthcare team such as doctors, nurses and allied health professionals and in a range of settings within GP practices, hospitals and on the high street. Apprenticeships in the Pharmacy Team include: Pharmacist, Pharmacy Assistant and Pharmacy Technician.
The Psychological Professions team helps people cope with problems as diverse as drug or alcohol addiction, eating disorders, family breakdown or bereavement. Psychological Therapies include branches of psychology related to healthcare, such as clinical or health psychology, counselling and psychotherapy roles and jobs within Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services. The team will work in GP practices, in hospitals and with people in everyday settings like schools, community centres and people’s homes. Apprenticeship opportunities will include Registered Nurses, Psychological Well-being Practitioners, Senior Healthcare Support Workers (Mental Healthcare Support), Arts Therapists, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists.
The Public Health team helps people to stay healthy and protect them from threats to their health. Healthcare often focuses on treating ill-health, whereas the public health team concentrates its efforts on reducing the causes of ill-health and improving the whole community’s health and wellbeing. There are all sorts of roles and career opportunities within public health, from entry roles, right up to the most senior level. Apprenticeships include: Environmental Health Practitioner, Safety, Health and Environment Technician, Public Health Practitioner, Regulatory Compliance Officer and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.
The Social Care team provides physical, emotional and social support to help people live their lives. The team provides a range of services and they may work helping people in their own homes, residential care or in a number of other places such as day centres or supported housing. Apprenticeships in the Social Care team include: Adult Care Worker, Lead Adult Care Worker, Lead Practitioner in Adult Care, Rehabilitation Practitioner and Social Worker.
The Support Services team includes non-clinical staff who are found working in all healthcare settings. The team carries out a very wide range of tasks keeping people or equipment safe, transporting people or equipment, administration, providing catering and keeping the environment clean and healthy. Apprenticeships in the Support Service Team include: Business Administrator, Chef, Clinical Coder, Customer Service Practitioner, Hospitality Supervisor and Hospitality Team Member.
The Theatres team provides care and support for people undergoing surgery, when they are having anaesthetics and when they are recovering post-operatively. They also look after the equipment and instruments that are used within the operating department and keep the theatres clean and safe. They usually work in hospitals. Apprenticeships include: Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Healthcare Support Worker (Theatre Support), Operating Department Practitioner and Registered Nurse.
The Voluntary Services team plays an important role in supporting the provision of healthcare services. Volunteers help with a wide range of activities such as office administration, emotional or social support to patients and families, signposting people to departments, collaborating on projects or fundraising events. The voluntary services team coordinates all the volunteer activity in the organisation. They work closely with service managers to place and supervise the volunteers who may work helping people in hospitals. The team may also be responsible for raising money to support volunteer activity within the organisation. Apprenticeships opportunities include (but not limited to): Associate Project Manager, Bid and Proposals Coordinator, Business Administrator, Chartered Manager, Customer Service Practitioner, Customer Service Specialist, Operations/Departmental Manager, Project Manager, Senior Leader and Team Leader/Supervisor.
