Community nurse specialist practitioners provide health care at an advanced level of practice to people of all ages and communities. They work across different organisations and settings; for example, primary care, social care, third-sector organisations, hospitals (including mental health), hospices, prisons, schools and other community services. The occupation’s broad purpose is working with people in a domestic setting (which could be an individual’s house), care homes, a hostel/hotels, prison services etc, a healthcare setting or even the streets, in the case of the homeless population. Community nurse specialist practitioners work independently and autonomously in situations that may be complex and challenging within the context specific environment they are working and are accountable for a large caseload of people with a wide range of complex and/or long-term health conditions, for whom they prioritise care, assess risk and may prescribe medication, dressings and appliances, in accordance with legislation.

Registered nurses are a key part of the multidisciplinary teams that meet the health and care needs of patients and service users. You will be at the centre of teams that can include other health and social care professionals. The current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards comprise a common core of skills and knowledge for all nursing students, with specialisms in adult nursing, children’s nursing, mental health and learning disabilities. The apprentice must meet the 15 standards required by the Care Quality Commission [as set out in the Care Certificate].

This occupation is found in every sector. Registered nurses work in the public, independent and voluntary sector. Registered nurses are a statutorily regulated profession and the standards for proficiency are set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and successful completion of this apprenticeship will meet the education requirements to see registration with the NMC. This standard covers the NMC Standards for Proficiency and Annexes A & B for registered nurses (May 2018) and covers the four fields of practice that are Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disability and Child.
Note: In May 2018, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) published new Standards of proficiency for registered nurses and a new apprenticeship standard has been developed to ensure that going forward the apprenticeship continues to be aligned with the NMC standards.

They combine expert clinical skills with research, education and clinical leadership within their scope of practice. Oral Health Practitioners have a high degree of autonomy and have responsibility for working directly with patients performing a range of oral health preventive procedure which involve working in a patient’s mouth. The Oral Health Practitioner role complements the role of other dental professionals and fits in the dental career structure a higher level than a dental nurse but below a dental hygienist, hygienist / therapist or dentist. Working to the direction of a dentist you will take dental bacterial plaque indices and debris scores, apply fluoride varnish, take clinical photographs, take impressions and carry out tooth brushing in the patient’s mouth. You will prepare and maintain the clinical environment, carry out infection control and prevention procedures, and prepare, mix and handle bio-materials.

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for undertaking reversible orthodontic procedures, which include bonding brackets on the teeth, fitting and changing wires and accessories that connect to the brackets, fitting removable appliances and retainers, following an appropriate prescription.

Nursing associates work in the public, independent and voluntary sectors and it is a statutorily regulated profession. A midwife is the first and main contact for a woman, her partner and family, recognised as a responsible and accountable professional, the midwife acts as an advocate for the woman, working in partnership with her and giving the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period. Midwives are lead co-ordinators of care as well as the first point of contact for a woman, her baby and family. They offer support, care and advice and are responsible for facilitating births and providing care for the newborn. Midwives are experts in normal physiological birth and in supporting the woman through all birth outcomes.

Physician associates are healthcare professionals who work alongside registered doctors and provide medical care as an integral part of a wider healthcare team. They are dependent practitioners, which means that they must work with a dedicated medical supervisor, but are able to work autonomously with appropriate support. They can be found working in GP surgeries, accident and emergency departments, care homes and hospitals. Physician associates are medically trained to provide all aspects of health care to patients, including: consultation, assessment, treatment and management of their health care. They can take medical histories, perform physical examinations, request and interpret investigations, diagnose and manage patients, and perform an extensive range of specialised procedural skills within their scope of practice.

This apprenticeship standard is approved for delivery.
Clinical Dental Technicians (CDT) are General Dental Council (GDC) registered dental professionals who provide a complete dentures direct to patients and other dental devices such as partial dentures to the prescription of a dentist. The CDT role fits between that of a dental technician and a dentist. Like a dental technician, they are able to make dentures in a laboratory but, unlike a dental technician, they have direct contact with patients. Like a dentist, they are able to work in the mouth, taking impressions for the edentulous, dentate or patient with implants. However, they are not able to prescribe to patients who have teeth and therefore work to prescriptions from the dentist as required. The CDT examines, assesses, provides treatment, gives advice and designs, manufactures, modifies and repairs custom-made dental appliances.
