End-point assessment is a characteristic of all apprenticeships arising from the government reforms to apprenticeships in England and this applies equally to apprenticeships delivered by higher education. This is true even when the end-point assessment is ‘integrated’ into the degree. For HEI’s offering integrated end-point assessment, getting onto the Education and Skills Funding Agency Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers is just the first step.
Where the apprenticeship end-point assessment is integrated into the degree it is counted within the total credit awarded by the university meaning that the university will not only be the training provider but will also be the end-point assessment organisation. In such cases, university providers of integrated degree apprenticeships must additionally be registered on the Education and Skills Funding Agency Register of End-Point Assessment Organisations.
Whereas applying to the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers is completed once per organisation allowing successful organisations to deliver multiple apprenticeships, applying to the Register of End-Point Assessment Organisations must be completed per apprenticeship standard. It’s important that university providers check that they are registered appropriately to enable them to provide end-point assessment. In the future, it is expected that apprentices will not be able to start an apprenticeship unless their university is registered as both the training provider and end-point assessment organisation in cases where the end-point assessment is integrated into the degree.
