The Doctor Degree Trailblazer Group is delighted to announce that the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education has approved the Level 7 Doctor Degree (GMC 2018) apprenticeship.
The Doctor Degree (GMC 2018) apprenticeship involves the same training, at the same high standard as traditional educational routes. Apprentices will complete all elements of medical education, academic and practical, including a medical degree, the Medical Licensing Assessment and meet all requirements set out by the General Medical Council and will be able to earn a wage while they study.
An apprenticeship could make the profession more accessible, more diverse and more representative of local communities. At present there are many barriers that exist, and which hold back talented people. An apprenticeship could help to change that, while maintaining the exact same high standards of training. We want to spread opportunity out to local communities and help to address the challenge of recruiting and retaining doctors in areas where recruitment is proving difficult
The Standard and Assessment Plan documents can be accessed here.
The funding band is £27,000.

Employers, training providers and apprentice assessment organisations can now prepare for delivery of the apprenticeship.
Please note that this apprenticeship has been approved, but starts are not anticipated until at least September 2023. Providers are currently exploring how best to deliver the apprenticeship. Those who wish to apply should periodically check NHS Jobs or the Government’s Find an Apprenticeship website for any apprenticeship vacancies from Autumn 2023 at the earliest.
