Focus on Job Families: Nursing

3 April, 2025

There are a wide range of apprenticeships available in areas such as Nursing, Healthcare Science, the People Professions and more. In the coming weeks we will be highlighting different areas to show the fantastic apprenticeships that are available. This week on ‘Focus on Job Families’, we will be focusing on nursing.

Apprenticeships give employers the opportunity to recruit fresh new talent as well as recruit and train individuals from the local area. They also create the opportunity for career progression for existing staff.

Check out HASO’s Long Term Workforce Plan Hub which has resources and guidance to help you on your way. Resources there include costing tools and business case templates on the organisation strategy page as well as wage information and tips on how to recruit an apprentice in the recruitment section.

Nursing is one of the most dynamic and rewarding roles within healthcare. They work directly with the patient in variety of settings which may include hospital wards, operating theatres, schools, patient homes and more.

There are four key areas of nursing that someone can choose to specialise in, with each leading on to a wide range of rewarding roles with plenty of scope for progression.

  • Adult Nurse
  • Mental Health Nurse
  • Learning Disability Nurse
  • Children’s Nurse.

NHS Health Careers details the different roles within nursing and what is involved.

Our Apprenticeship Standards Factsheet shows what apprenticeship standards are approved for delivery in this area.

We also have a range of case studies to guide and inspire you. Read Emma’s story and about the Ambassador programme below or visit our case studies page to read other stories.

North Bristol NHS Trust offer the Level 5 Nursing Associate (NMC 2018) apprenticeship standard at the trust. They have introduced a TNA (Trainee Nursing Associate) Ambassador programme and had the following to say about programme:

‘It is easy to set up the role and leave it which would be of little use. Our advice would be to have regular meetings with the ambassadors to check in with them and to offer them opportunities to help at recruitment events, interviews, inductions etc.

Have jobs for each ambassador’s skill set. These people relish opportunities to learn and to advance themselves. Embrace that passion.’
