The Department for Education (DFE) have published statistics covering apprenticeships for the first quarter of the 2023 to 2024 academic year (01/08/2023 – 31/10/2023).
These statistics cover learners aged 16 and over and cover the apprenticeship service and the find an apprenticeship service.
Some figures for 01/08/2023 – 31/10/2023 include:
- Apprenticeship starts were up by 7% to 130,830 compared to 122,290 reported for the same period in the previous year.
- Proportion of starts supported by ASA (Apprenticeship Service Account) levy funds was 62.2% (81,380).
- Under 19s accounted for 32.7% of starts (42,740).
- Learner participation decreased by 2.1% to 560,100 compared to 572,210 last year.
- Since May 2015 there have been 3,349,820 apprenticeship starts. Since May 2010 this total stands at 5,727,360.
- Apprenticeship achievements increased by 22% to 37,400 compared to 30,650 in last year. Please note: COVID-19 restrictions and assessment flexibilities affected the timing of achievements, therefore care must be taken when comparing achievements between years as some achievements expected in a given academic year may have been delayed to the subsequent year.
The proportion of starts by level was:
- Advanced Apprenticeships: 43% of starts (56,200)
- Higher Apprenticeships: 35.3% of starts (46,230)
Higher apprenticeships continue to grow in 2023/24. Higher apprenticeship starts increased by 9.9% to 46,230 compared to 42,060 in the same period last year.
Starts at Level 6 and 7 increased by 4.2% to 22,980 in 2023/24. This represents 17.6% of all starts for 2023/24. There were 22,060 Level 6 and 7 starts last year (18.0% of starts in the same period).
