Pathways Tool and Costing Calculator – Launched

29 November, 2018

Two new tools are now available on the HASO toolkit.

  • Pathways Tool
  • Costing Calculator

The Pathways Tool allows you to download examples of typical apprenticeship pathways or to create your own, stepping from one apprenticeship to the next. Use it in conjunction with your existing staff to discuss their career options, with potential apprentices to explain what a career in health may look like, or use it yourself to decide your own next career move. Personalise and then download your pathways to save, share or refer back to later.

Jane Hadfield, National Senior Programme Manager – Apprenticeships
Health Education England

“HEE are delighted to have worked with Skills for Health to develop these tools. Managers from across the health sector have been asking for help with apprenticeship career planning and I know the pathway tool will give them the flexibility they require to look at existing routes as well as developing new ones themselves.  The costing tool is so quick and easy to use that I can see lots of managers accessing it regularly to help with their workforce planning and budgeting requirements.”

This is what our group of testers said about the Pathways Tool:

  • Alison Ackew, Programme Lead
West Yorkshire and Harrogate Excellence Centre

“This tool will be helpful for the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Excellence Centre as it will enable us to signpost the potential career paths that are available to both members of staff and apprentices (whether working in clinical or non-clinical roles), and individuals exploring career opportunities within the health and care sector.”

  • Dawn Grant, Project Manager (Support Worker Development)
Health Education England Working across North London

“People always think you have to step from level 2 to 3 to 4 but you can actually step straight in at the higher level if you have the skills and experience already. The tool allows you to start from any point.”

  • Karen Pudge, Widening Access & Apprenticeship Lead
    Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust

“Not everyone will want to go onto the highest level eg Advanced Clinical Practitioner. It’s good that the tools lets you finish your pathway at whichever point you choose.”

  • Paul Marijetic, Education Manager
Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust

“Progression can be sideways or down. It’s not always hierarchical. Sometimes you will be working at a level 6 as a registered professional and yet do a level 3 apprenticeship in management. The categories option in the tool allow you to sidestep and recognises dual-professionality.”

The Costing Calculator lets you quickly calculate the estimated cost to the organisation of having an apprentice. The tool is an easy to use ready reckoner that quickly and effectively allows you to work through the key financial implications. It is useful for all staff involved in planning and supporting apprenticeship implementation across health organisations in the statutory, independent or private sector. The tool has been developed following a number of apprenticeship development projects. Apprenticeship leads were exploring the financial implications of different scenarios around increasing the number and diversity of apprenticeships they wanted to offer across their organisations.

Jan Parfitt, Senior Consultant
Workforce Development Trust

“We initially developed a set of excel spread sheets that worked through various scenarios but it was time consuming and complex for a non-excel expert. The tool has been designed to allow you to work through as many different scenarios as you like; choosing any combination of different apprenticeship standards with their associated funding band, changeable delivery times and salaries, for you to understand the different financial implications at the touch of a button. We hope it helps you in practice. However, please remember this tool is only about exploring scenarios and you will still need to engage with your finance departments to fully explore the financial details of your apprenticeship implementation plans.”
