Apprentice Case Studies – Becoming a Chef in the NHS

7 February, 2023

Chefs are responsible for cooking food in NHS hospitals and other services making sure patients and staff have healthy high quality food. They work as part of a team in time-bound and often challenging kitchen environments

Production chefs are likely to work with centrally developed standardised recipes and menus, producing food often in high volumes. They apply highly methodical organisational skills, energy, accuracy, attention to detail and are mindful of the importance of sustainability and protecting the environment.

Meet two apprentices who are undertaking the Level 2 Production Chef apprenticeship. Connor Gutsell and Harry Sandy are Production Chef apprentices at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

“I am most proud of the fact that once I am qualified I can put back into the NHS Trust. I believe food is medicine and a way to help people get better.” Connor Gutsell
